Over the past 10 years MinION has transformed the field of genomics
MinION in action
Tracking coronavirus in the Gobi Desert
MinION enabled Massimo Delledonne and his team to conduct genetic analyses, including the barcoding of bats and the detection of coronavirus in samples, in the Gobi Desert. The expedition demonstrated the versatility and robustness of the MinION in extreme conditions and set a precedent for future genetic research and biodiversity conservation in challenging environments.
Metagenomics in Antarctica
Sarah S. Johnson et al. took MinION to the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The team conducted sequencing using only local battery power supplied by their laptop, in temperatures below freezing and without internet connectivity.
Their goal was to assess extremophiles and microbial communities of Antarctica and to determine the feasibility of genomic sequencing in extreme environments.
Sequencing in space
In 2016, MinION was used to conduct the first-ever DNA sequencing in space. The goal was to demonstrate the potential for sequencing for microbial detection, environmental monitoring, and disease detection.
Since then, MinION has been used to conduct more than 800 experiments, helping to understand the molecular basis for how organisms respond to spaceflight.
Learn more about MinION
MinION is a real-time, portable sequencer that can be used almost anywhere. It has been used in hundreds of research labs across the world, lowering the barrier to access genomic information.
The MinION Mk1D is the next generation, designed to be compatible with the new iPad Pro (in combination with the MinION Mk1D iPad Accessory), modern laptops, and MacBooks, via USB-C connectivity.
