How do I remotely connect to my sequencing device?

How do I remotely connect to my sequencing device?

You can connect remotely to a sequencing device using a computer on the same local area network via the Connection manager feature in MinKNOW, as described in the MinKNOW manual.

Network requirements:

  • Both remote machine and sequencer are connected to the same LAN either directly or via VPN
  • Both the remote machine and sequencer are running the same version release of MinKNOW
  • Ports 8000 -> 8100, 9502, 9505, and 9800 are open

Follow the steps outlined below to view and control your device remotely:

  1. Install the full device software for MinION Mk1D or the Remote Viewer software on your local computer. You can find these on the Sotware downloads page.

  2. Ensure your device is connected to the same Local Area Network (LAN) by ethernet or wifi.

  3. Open MinKNOW on your local computer and in the Connection manager select Add host. In the Add host box, enter the device ID (e.g. PCAxxxxxx, GXBxxxxx, MC-xxxxxx, where x is a digit) or enter the device's IP address (listed in Host Settings > Network Settings on P2i and MinION Mk1C). If you are connecting to the MinION Mk1C through its Hotspot, you can use the local IP address 10.42.0.1.

add host
  1. Once the device is recognized, click on its card in Connection manager.

  2. From here you will be able to start, monitor, and stop runs, as well as access information in Host settings.
Note: The sequencing run or post-run analysis will still be processed on the device and data will still be stored on the device until you transfer it. Some options are not available when accessing your device remotely.

Is your device still not recognized remotely?

On your remote computer, ensure that you have installed the latest version of MinKNOW from the Downloads page .

If your sequencing device is on MinKNOW 24.06 and above, the default security settings prevent remote access, as explained in the Device security settings section of the MinKNOW manual. Remote connections must be enabled manually.

For PromethION 24/48, PromethION 2 Integrated and GridION users: Open MinKNOW on the device. Navigate to Host settings > Device settings. Ensure that the Enable firewall slider is disabled. Power cycle your device for the changes to take effect.

For PromethION 2 Solo and MinION users on personal computers: Disconnect any loaded flow cells prior to running these commands

(a)Ubuntu users

sudo service minknow restart

(b) Windows users
