- Biography
Professor Dame Chitty has published extensively on prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound screening of fetal abnormalities (H-index 81). She was awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 in recognition of her service to medicine. Later that year, she was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, recognising exceptional contributions to the advancement of health science and cutting- edge research. She led the work on the use of circulating cell-free DNA in maternal plasma resulting in implementation in the UK for the non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) of monogenic conditions, as well as rapid fetal exome sequencing for improved diagnosis of fetuses with sonographic abnormalities. She continues to work on the implementation of new molecular techniques to improve both pre- and postnatal diagnosis. Her research is always patient focused, working closely with patient support organisations, social scientists, and ethicists to ensure patient-focused service delivery. She led the establishment of the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub. Prof. Dame Chitty is a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator Emeritus, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Prenatal Diagnosis, Past President of the International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis, and Deputy Director of the GOSH NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.
