Molecular distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in Senegal

About Abdou Padane

Abdou Padane is a Ph.D. student in collaboration with the Méditerranée Infection Foundation (Marseille) and IRESSEF (Dakar). The aim of his thesis is to characterize endemic pathogens in Senegal. Abdou Padane is the manager of the BSL3 laboratory at IRESSEF and the genomic laboratory. Abdou Padane is a pharmacist biologist working on HIV during his doctorate degree in Pharmacy. He has a Master's degree in Immunology and Infection during which he worked on tuberculosis.


In Senegal, the SARS-CoV-2 incidence evolved remarkably with three successive epidemic waves. During the first wave, the most common clade found was 19A (70.27%) and the majority of the samples were of the B.1 (54.05%) lineage. We noted more diversity during the second wave where clade 20B (40.82%) was more frequent. In the third wave, we found greater proportions of the variants of interest compared to the first two waves (B.1.525 [47.69%], B.1.617.2 [20%] and B.1.1.7 [6.15%]). In Senegal, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic during the three waves showed variability of strains over time.
